To explain our feature, here is an historic example. On June 7, 1867, G.G. Gates moved one bundle of cargo on the Grand Trunk Railway Co. from Portland to North Falls. The freight bill was paid COD. All this was done at the risk of cargo owner G.G. Gates himself for loss or damage while the freight was in storage, the ultimate damage limitation. As will be seen in this series of Internet features, the concept of limits on damages for which air & ocean carriers are responsible is ancient in origin. We will trace the public policy for these limits on liability to the little coffee shop known in 1600 as Lloyd's of London.
Below you will find an index to voyages and travels which are far more interesting and even mysterious. You will be suprised and amazed.
While historic bills of lading are fun to view, they also provide rare glimpses to the past and insights to the traditions & evolution of our International industry. In coming weeks The Law Offices of Countryman & McDaniel will continue posting selections from its historic bill of lading collection to this page. Visit often to view, read and see what lessons we have to learn from the past. We welcome your comments, contributions and suggestions. Our first selections are listed below. We promise it will be worth your time.
