The Prolog To Disaster -- Operations At The Port of Los Angeles

M/V Jumbo Challenger Safely Loading Project Cargo At Misima In Papua New Guinea.

PROLOG >> M/V Jumbo Challenger has distinguished herself in over 25 years of heavy project cargo oerations around the world. But as we have tried to make clear:
"Ship Happens! ©"
The best equipment, experience & training are never actual protection from what we refer to as "The Bad Thing."

When the bad thing happens -- as it always will -- only quality marine cargo insurance will protect the cargo owner.

This is because all Int'l cargo carriers -- land, sea & air -- limit their liability to cargo owners -- due to the inherent danger of the endeavor & a universal realization that the bad thing will always happen -- it being only a matter of time.

International Law adopted this concept of the bad thing many years ago in virtually all modes of transportation.

On Feb. 22 2007 -- this "matter of time" concept would meet up with M/V Jumbo Challenger at our Port of Los Angeles.

Despite all the best precautions -- the bad thing happened.

Michael S. McDaniel - Your Editor

The Cargo Letter for Feb. 22 2007 -- M/V Jumbo Challenger Suffers A Drop At LAX

6,555 gt. Netherlands general cargo M/V Jumbo Challenger (built 1983) in the port of Los Angeles conducting offload operations -- one of the vessel's 2 cranes gave way & dropped the top portion of a 638 metric ton petroleum reactor onto the pier. The reactor, which is used in the oil refining process, was destined for the BP Oil Refinery in Carson, Calif. The vessel sustained damage to her hull & crane and will require repairs prior to departing Los Angeles. No injuries. U.S. Coast Guard, Los Angeles Port Police & Los Angeles Fire Dept. responded & working with cargo facility and vessel's representatives to safely move the heavy cargo. NOTE: Please Provide Us With Your Additional Information For This Loss.

EDITOR'S NOTE FOR SURVEYORS, ATTORNEYS & MARINE ADJUSTERS: The Internet edition effort of The Cargo Letter now celebrates it's 8th Year of Service -- making us quite senior in this segment of the industry. We once estimated container underway losses at about 1,500 per year. Lloyd's put that figure at about 10,000 earlier this year. Quite obviously, the reporting mechanism for these massive losses is not supported by the lines. News of these events is not posted to the maritime community. Our new project is to call upon you -- those handling the claims -- to let us know of each container loss at sea-- in confidentiality. Many of you survey on behalf of cargo interests with no need for confidentiality. Others work for the lines & need to be protected. As a respected Int'l publication, The Cargo Letter enjoys full press privileges & cannot be forced to disclose our sources of information. No successful attempt has ever been made. If a personal notation for your report is desired -- each contributor will be given a "hot link" to your company Website in each & every report. Please take moment & report your "overside" containers to us. If you do not wish attribution, your entry will be "anonymous." This will will benefit our industry -- for obvious reasons! McD
