Port of Los Angeles September 18, 2001 |
"From many. One."
The Time: 1730 hrs.The Date: Tuesday, 18 September 2001
- It was one week after America changed on Sept. 11.- But America is quite well known for moving forward.
- America can look at this wharf incident - laugh - and then exceed world cargo handling.
- It is our system of allowing problems to be shown -- that is known as FREEDOM
- God Bless America.
The Place: Yusen Terminal. Port of Los Angeles (Berth 214 -- NYK Line) (terminal details on next page)
The INCIDENT:It was the last the last container lift of the shift at 5:30 PM. An RTG (Rubber-Tired-Gantry) crane (or"Transtainer") was working the yard pile moving containers from storage to an outside trucker for a next leg of their movement off the terminal, toward delivery.
The RTG was traveling to move a can from the pile to where the trucker was parked
-- when the ground beneath the forward-left wheel gave way
-- to a sink hole on the dock itself.
Indeed, peers on the wharf said it was it was time for some "Pier Review!"
It's left-foward wheel filling the hole -- the RTG proceeded to tilt over -- and --
-- and -- eventually collapsed the RTG onto the waiting truck & chassis.
It is understood that this 40 ft container was not overweight -- the ground just gave way.

The trucker was uninjured -- minor cut on his arm.
We're still trying to find a manifest for this OOCL container
-- but hope this was not that shipment of fine china.
Because the RTG rolled over slowly, the operator was able to be helped out
-- before the cab was eventually crushed.
