The Prolog To Disaster -- Jork'd On The Open Sea

PROLOG

The 141 meter Cypriot-flagged M/V Jork Ranger was proceeding in clear seas on Oct. 12 when there was a meeting with the Greek tanker M/T Mindoro.

Even 60 years ago, early in the age of radar, it was common -- still is -- for bridge crews to report fixing the position of "the other vessel" some five miles off -- just before the collision. Such is the nature of human error.

These are matters of human error -- but these guys have your cargo! Thus we remind of the need for shippers to obtain high quality Marine Cargo Insusurance to protect their valuable goods from incidents such as this.

Last, can it not be said that one struck by M/V Jork Ranger -- has been Jork'd?

M/V Jork Ranger Seems To Be Steaming With A Smile

Greek-owned tanker M/T Mindoro that collided with German container M/V Jork Ranger off the coast of the Netherlands has begun to leak its cargo of jet fuel, authorities said.
M/T Mindoro collided with M/V Jork Ranger about 15 miles off the Dutch coast and sustained a 15-foot by 20-foot gash above the waterline.

M/V Jork Ranger suffered damage to its bow but continued its journey to Rotterdam in the Netherlands, officials said.

M/T Mindoro is at a stationary at the point of the collision off Scheveningen.

Rotterdam, Europe's busiest port, sees large numbers of container ships, bulk carriers and tankers move in and out every day.

Jet fuel is light and vaporizes quickly so is unlikely to cause serious pollution.
