The Last Days of M/V MSC Napoli

From The Cargo Law Air Force - 19 July 2007 - Getting Ready For The BIG BANG
"You can't keep a good plane down...today I was rung by news syndicate pilot Maureen White - would I like a flight? So.. where else to go but have a quick look at M/V MSC Napoli ...again, 2000 foot minimum. It is being prepared for blowing apart in the morning - there will be a ban on flying nearby when that happens. I confess to forgetting to put the camera on high resolution - I promise I'm a better pilot than cameraman! Withdrawn to a safe distance for the fireworks display...

Explosives Are Detonated On M/V MSC Napoli 's Starboard Side

From The Cargo Letter - 20 July 2007 pm - The End Comes For M/V MSC Napoli
Explosions were triggered soon after midday on M/V MSC Napoli. The stern of M/V MSC Napoli will stay on site and be cut up while the bow section has been towed away for recycling, possibly in mainland Europe. Two previous explosions on 18 & 19 July had been unsuccessful The operation was carried out by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

Explosives are detonated on the M/V MSC Napoli 's starboard side. Toby Stone, head of counter pollution and response at the MCA, said: "We are pleased with the outcome of today's operation, and we now move into the next phase considering options for disposal. He said it was "good news" that the two halves of the ship had detached cleanly, adding there was no chance of re-floating the stern section.

Robin Middleton, the Secretary of State's representative for Maritime Salvage, said the separation of the M/V MSC Napoli had been a "copybook" operation. Mr Middleton, who took the decision to ground M/V MSC Napoli off the Devon coast, said a recycling site would be sought over the coming weeks for the bow section, now about a mile offshore. M/V MSC Napoli 's hull is split after the third set of explosions The stern, including the accommodation block, would remain grounded where a contractor would dismantle it and the metal would be recycled. Contractors could be working on the stern within a month, and it would take about three further months to dismantle. Mr Middleton said: "Without any doubt whatsoever, it was the right decision to ground M/V MSC Napoli in Lyme Bay. "We could have had 3,800 tons of oil here, containers, chemicals in the water, we may have had to close access to the Channel. "I am glad we have achieved this with the lack of damage to the environment we have."

From our Correspondent Ashely Black.

M/V MSC Napoli Is No More.

M/V MSC Naploi - Two Points of View

Editor Note: Our reader Jon took this exclusive photo from shore on July 25. The view shows both halves of M/V MSC Naploi after the third explosives detonation.

There is a slight shadow in the image because splicing two shots was required to show exactly the correct distance between bow & stern -- afloat over half a mile away from one another with escort ships.

There will be more & better photos of M/V MSC Naploi death to follow -- but this photo can never be matched for the message it brings to us.

We have watched this disaster together now for 7 months.

These have been days of danger, adventure, hope, rescue, tragedy, hope, adventure salvage, salvage, adventure, hope, success, failure, success, triumph, adventure -- and ultimate failure for the life of M/V MSC Naploi. A young ship, now passed.

Jon's photo sums it all up. More text is not needed at this time.

M/V MSC Naploi is no more. This former vessel now truly has TWO POINTS OF VIEW. One North & the other South.

More to come for this loss, but not about M/V MSC Naploi as a vessel.

From The Cargo Letter - 7 Aug. 2007 - M/V MSC Napoli In The Afterlife

Looks like we are to get some of the MSC Napoli here in Northern Ireland…….. as salvors are preparing to tow part of the former cargo ship M/V MSC Naploi from Devon to Belfast for recycling. The damaged ship, which was beached off Sidmouth in January, was split in two after a series of explosions.

The stern of M/V MSC Naploi remains grounded but the bow section is expected to be towed to a Belfast shipyard where it will be broken up. A Maritime and Coastguard spokesman said she could be towed this week but they needed a five-day weather window.

The bow will be towed by a coastguard tug around the Cornish coast to the Irish Sea. Tenders have been received for the disposal of the stern section which will be dismantled offshore and the metal recycled.

From our Correspondent Ashely "The Hats" Black

From Our Reader - 8 Aug. 2007 - M/V MSC Napoli On The Move

The bow section seems to be on the move having been towed by tug M/V Anglian Earl to a position directly off Sidmouth seafront this evening. High tide is about 02.30 Aug. 9 so would anticipate she will head down channel with the tide on her way to Northern Ireland for breaking.

Good Night M/V MSC Napoli & Goodbye

From Our Correspondent - 18 Aug. 2007 - A Final Eyewitness -- The End Has Come
The half of M/V MSC Napoli was towed in to dry dock in Belfast to be cut up for scrap. Sad end to a fine ship and the end of your story. Sorry I dont have a pic for you. I didnt have my cam.

EDITOR'S NOTE FOR SURVEYORS, ATTORNEYS & MARINE ADJUSTERS: The Internet edition effort of The Cargo Letter now celebrates it's 8th Year of Service -- making us quite senior in this segment of the industry. We once estimated container underway losses at about 1,500 per year. Lloyd's put that figure at about 10,000 earlier this year. Quite obviously, the reporting mechanism for these massive losses is not supported by the lines. News of these events is not posted to the maritime community. Our new project is to call upon you -- those handling the claims -- to let us know of each container loss at sea-- in confidentiality. Many of you survey on behalf of cargo interests with no need for confidentiality. Others work for the lines & need to be protected. As a respected Int'l publication, The Cargo Letter enjoys full press privileges & cannot be forced to disclose our sources of information. No successful attempt has ever been made. If a personal notation for your report is desired -- each contributor will be given a "hot link" to your company Website in each & every report. Please take moment & report your "overside" containers to us. If you do not wish attribution, your entry will be "anonymous." This will will benefit our industry -- for obvious reasons! McD
